Sim-to-real

Sim-to-real is the transfer of methods or models developed in simulation to a real system. It aims to use simulation while accounting for differences from reality.

How it works

Domain randomization varies training conditions so a model is not tied to one simulated appearance. Tobin and colleagues investigated this approach for transferring a visual model.

Where to start

Simulation can help prepare experiments and compare alternatives before physical trials. Results still need testing with real sensors, actuators and objects.

Limits and what to verify

Friction, compliance, delay and camera differences can create a gap between simulation and operation. Simulator success is not automatically real-robot success.

Before requesting a quote

Specify whether perception, planning or motion control is being transferred. Check the platform model, interfaces and licences. Give initial physical trials a limited scope and explicit stop conditions.
